Author Synge, John (1788-1845)
Admin Biographical History Synge, John (1788-1845) grandfather of the playwright John Millington Synge; known as 'Pestalozzi John' from his enthusiasm for the teachings of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827, Swiss educationalist); he is an important figure in the history of the Plymouth Brethen in Ireland; he owned land in Glanmore in Co. Wicklow. He married Isabella daughter of Hugh Hamilton, founder member of the RIA.
Scope And Content Sketch book kept in Devon & Cornwall 1825-1830 and in Wicklow 1835, 1839. Mostly very simple, partially-completed, pencil sketches of seascapes with ships. Titles, taken from original, are written on the page facing the image. Not all details included; some of the sketches are negligable.
