Scope And Content Folios 1-126v. Antiphonal, with music, Irish Sarum use (cf. 'Antiphonale Sarisburiense', facsimile edition by W.H. Frere, (London, 1901-1924) and cf. 'Breuiarium Ad Vsum Insignis Ecclesiae Sarum', edd. F. Procter and C. Wordsworth, 3 volumes, (Cambridge, 1882, 1879, 1886):

1-48. (1) Temporale, beg. imperf. (Sunday in octave of Easter, hymn at second vespers [Sarum breviary, edn. cit., l:dccclxv] to twenty-fifth Sunday after Trinity followed, on 46-48, by feast of Relics [cf. ib. 2:451-466]): angelo erepti de durissimo pharaonis - Corpora sanctorum. Beati qui habitant. Loss of leaf after 46v in service for feast of Relics (text jumps from ‘Absterget deus omnem’ to ‘corpora sua propter deum ad supplicia’). Some loss of text on 9- 11v (part of each leaf torn away). 48v originally blank.

49-54v. (2) Calendar (not full), with grading, holy days entered in red or black. Among the entries in red: 'Ricardi Row archiepiscopi Armachani' (i.e. Fitzralph, 14 March, on 50), 'Patricii' (50), 'Brandani' (51), 'Columbe' (51v), 'Francisci' (53v), 'Laurentii archiepiscopi Dublinensis' (54). Among the entries in black: 'Edani' (49), 'Brigide' (49v), 'Fergna' (50), 'Laseriani' (50v), 'Comgalli' (51),'Malachie' (54). Entries for Thomas of Canterbury (49, 52, 54v) are undisturbed. Additions (16th-century hands): 51v (a) Dampnade [i.e. Dympna] uirginis et martiris, (b) Nota quod sequenti dominica post festum sancti Columbe celebratur translacio patronorum Hibernie; 54v Sancti Finiani episcopi et confessoris. Obits (one in Irish) added by 16th century hands are published by A. Gwynn in 'The Journal of the County Louth Archaeological Society' 11 (1945) 11-12 with discussion on pp. 3-5, but the very first obit (on 49) was missed: Obitus Henrici Ineill filii Terentii Ineill domini de Tíreoghain 1578. Additions on 50 and 52 are scrubbed out.

55-126. (3) The Psalms, with hymns, antiphons, versicles, and responses, arranged for canonical hours throughout the week. Slight loss of text on 73rv (part of leaf torn away). (3) includes as a group the Penitential Psalms (80- 81v), headed: Incipiunt psalmi penitentiales.

126rv. (4) Additional service, for Trinity Sunday. Cf. the direction earlier in the text (18v): Festum sancte trinitatis uide plene inmediate post completorium.

On a leaf preceding the calendar is a statement in Irish that in 1535 Archbishop Dowdall charged Conn O'Neill (then Earl O'Neill) and others with having seized to themselves much of the estate of the primate and of the church. Evidence having been given O'Neill surrendered the lands, with a translation by Professor O'Mahony dated 1867 (insertion). The next page has a request for prayer for Donnchadh O'Carbhaill, prince of Airgiall, who built and restored churches and monasteries 1170.

There are also some obituaries in Irish and folio 282 has marginalia in Irish.
Phyiscal Description Dating Note: Ann Buckley, ‘Music in Ireland to c.1500’, in A New History of Ireland, volume 1, ed. D. Ó Cróinín, (Oxford, 2005), 809, dates this antiphonal as 'probably between 1416 and c1450.

Custodial History 53v has this notice (ed. Gwynn t.c. 12): Iohannes Bellew miles et eius uxor Isma Nuindseand [i.e. Nugent] pro quadam summa pecunie hunc emerunt librum olim huic ecclesie per diutina tempora ablatum, (et added) in honore illius qui sua ineffabili misericordia omnia nobis confert, ad nostrum seruicium augendum restituerunt; quorum anime cum electis dei in pace requiescant (16th century hand). TCD MS 77 apparently belonged to the cathedral of Armagh. Concerning Bellew and his wife see Gwynn t.c. 6. 54 has a notice about lands in Mayo which were the property of the archbishop of Armagh (ed. Gwynn t.c. 12; 16th-century hand). 126 has (ed. Gwynn t.c. 12): Anno domini m’o ccccc lxxviii occisus fuit Patritius Plunkett quondam baro de Luth per filios Bernardi mhegmhathghamhna tertio die (Aprilis? erased) Maii. Concerning this entry see Gwynn t.c. 5. The pieces added on 48 and 48v are by one 16th century hand. Inscriptions are scrubbed out from 48.

The large size of the book required the use of single leaves and bifolia for the make-up of quires. Catchwords usually on scrolls (the catchword ‘sagitte’ on 94v is framed by arrow with yellow point).
Decoration Initials blue with red flourishes (unflourished blue initials, e.g. on 111v, 114, may be unfinished), other initials red; calligraphic initials with flourishes in the ink of the text. These flourishes sometimes represent a head (e.g. 14v, 60v), but there are also other motifs: hare (111v), animal with red tints (117v), man blowing horn (124v). Capitals marked with red. Lines of musical staves are in red.
Binding Note Executed for the College in 1741-1744 by the shop of John Exshaw of Dublin in speckled calf.
