Author William Corbet
Scope And Content The family papers of the United Irishman William Corbet (1779-1842). He was expelled from Trinity College Dublin 1798 for seditious activities and joined the French army as a captain. Arrested in Hamburg he was brought back to Dublin and imprisoned in Kilmainham in 1799. In 1803 he escaped and rejoined the French army, becoming colonel in 1815 and later general. The papers consist largely of letters to his brother Frederick in New York, together with correspondence of other members of the Corbet and Lyons families. MS 5967 consists of a manuscript which belonged to James Lyons Cork (1848), who most probably wrote it. It includes Napper Tandy’s own account of his arrest at Hamburg and an obituary of William Corbet from the 'Cork Southern Reporter'.
